Cloud computing and hard
It is not hard to notice how the "old fashioned" hard drives are falling out of the trend. Because of the portable and compact laptops which use flash drives that have hit the market recently people are starting to look away in horror from the huge memory leviathans that are hard drives. The cost is one of the main reasons why people choose flash drives and because it is very practical too. In other words, we are progressing to the new digital age in which hard drives just don't fit.
The main "enemy" of the hard drive is basically the Internet. Giving people unlimited access to information was only the first step and now people want to turn the Internet into a mass storage facility that anyone can use. Another factor is the cost of all this. The prices of storage are falling for both businesses and costumers. Now we can buy a flash memory stick larger than a terabyte for less than a hi-tech gadget. If you look at these two promising factors and put them together you get a brand new and efficient way of storing information. One example of such storing technology is Flickr. You can store all of your photos onto Flickr and delete the ones you have on your computer thus freeing memory of your hard drive and still be able to access all your work. This is just a small example but let's take it a little further. Imagine not having to install Microsoft office, for example, on your computer and still be able to do all your worksheets and such. This is the main concept of Google docs. All this accessible computing is known as cloud computing because all your files are stored in the ether of the digital realm rather than the physical hard drive. There are some people who are skeptical about it though, because Internet isn’t the safest place to keep personal things, like photos, videos and such. But the future seems promising in this direction, and being able to store unlimited data into a virtual space sounds amazing.
This is the beauty of cloud computing: spending less money on unlimited drive space on the Internet rather than a limited hard drive. It’s a technology that will be able to revolutionize the meaning of storage device. The way it looks so far, the hard drives don't have a chance facing the new giant "cloud in the sky".
